Team Rocket
Description
Team Rocket comprises four mappers: AD_79, Dragonfly, Jimmy and MTrop – all experienced Doom mappers who endured a 20-hour speedmapping livestream together. Their efforts were supported by kind donations from viewers, and guest mappers who tagged in to let the fatigued rocketeers recuperate.
Everything was mapped in one “sitting”. Mappers were of course permitted to take refreshment/restroom breaks and regularly depart from the computer to walk and stretch.
A few months before this kicked off, I raised the idea of “endurance speedmapping” , which applied more to a single individual mapping out an entire megawad in one sitting, but even so the idea provoked a good amount of discussion. Dragonfly, interested by the idea, asked a few individuals to join a team-based effort towards this very goal, and have this group together spread the workload.
In addition to everything being streamed, there were donation incentives so viewers could have the power to support the mappers and influence the outcome of the streams! Donors were able to make special requests about the maps being made, give the mappers special limitations, provide inspirational material for the mappers to work from, and even order in-game music to be written specially.
We have now gone through all of this madness twice. Both projects are listed below!
Team Rocket: Blasting Off At the Speed of Mapping
Streamed: June 23, 2018
Our first attempt, and a success it was! Through our combined efforts, some loosely preconceived ideas for the levels, and the encouragement of you, our viewership, the stream ran for 20 hours, and yielded a megawad of 34 speedmaps, with everything streamed through Dragonfly’s Twitch stream.
The 35th map in this set is a tribute to all our guest mappers and donors! We couldn’t have made this without you.

Team Rocket 2: Looks Like We’re Blasting Off Again!
Streamed: February 8, 2020
We couldn’t resist doing it again.
The session ended with a very successful 34 maps, and 3 original MIDI tracks written. We also had six guest mappers who each created one level.
Another mammoth effort, and I think the majority of us were feeling the effects of sleeplessness, even early on! Once again it was great fun, though, and I don’t think we’d completely rule out doing it a third time.
